Whooping cough is also known as pertussis and is a disease caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. Whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory infection that can cause serious problems to both babies and children. Whooping cough is spread primarily by person to person contact. Whooping cough generally effects around between 10-90 million people per year and causes around 500,000 deaths per year.
